Partnership for Global Justice:Action Alert, September 2009

The current global economic and food crises have necessitated a realignment of the world’s financial resources. The United Nations has always staunchly held that peace and security for all peoples can only be possible through disarmament – both nuclear and conventional. This year September 21, the International Day of Peace, will be focused on a call for disarmament and non-proliferation, providing an opportunity for us to join the many voices calling for disarmament now.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon launched the WMD: We Must Disarm Campaign to kick off the 100-Day Countdown to the International Day of Peace – September 21.

In his address he stated:

The International Day of Peace, observed each year on 21 September, is a global call for ceasefire and non-violence. It is a time to reflect on the horror and cost of war and the benefits of peacefully resolving our disputes. This year… use this important day …to focus on the important issues of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. ….Unless we vigorously work for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, we will continue to face threats from existing nuclear weapons, as well as additional risks that more States, even terrorists, might acquire and deploy such weapons, potentially annihilating millions of people.

When Baltimore Archbishop Edwin O’Brien addressed the 2009 Deterrence Symposium sponsored by the U.S. Strategic Command, he quoted Pope Benedict’s 2006 World Day of Peace Message: “What can be said … about those governments which count on nuclear arms as a means of ensuring the security of their countries? Along with countless persons of good will, one can state that this point of view is not only baneful but also completely fallacious. In a nuclear war there would be no victors, only victims.”
