Partnership for Global Justice: September 2008 Alert

As we anticipate the upcoming activities this fall, consider participating in International Day of Peace, September 21st. This important day provides us with an opportunity to create practical acts of peace and a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly.

By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted itself to world- wide peace and encouraged all of humankind to work in cooperation for this goal. Since its inception, Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress toward peace. It has grown to include millions of people in all parts of the world and each year events are organized to commemorate and celebrate this day.

International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire—personal or political. Consider taking this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole day of Ceasefire would mean to humanity and Earth.

Suggested ways to participate:

  • Send a letter to your elected representative reminding him/her about the Peace Day Cease Fire. Go to www.internationaldayofpeace.org. Go to Global Ceasefire for more information.
  • Participate in 11 Days of Global Unity, September 11-21, culminating on the International Day of Peace. Sign on to the Declaration of Interdependence. Go to www.wetheworld.org.
Go to: Be the Change, to sign on.
  • Add your peace activities to the websites so that others can participate and be inspired.
  • Participate in the Novena for Peace. Go to www.stcharlesborromeo.catholicweb.com for this resource. It is also enclosed as an attachment to this email.
  • Participate in The International Day of Peace Vigil which is meant to encourage worldwide,
24-hour spiritual observations for peace and nonviolence on the International Day of Peace, September 21st. Plan a 24 hour spiritual event, or observe a moment of silence, ring church bells, or rededicate a Peace Pole. Go to: www.idpvigil.com for more information and register your event.
